Standard Group’s Zubeida Kananu has successfully defended her position as President of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) following a closely contested election held on Saturday.
Kananu emerged victorious with 72 votes, narrowly edging out her main challenger, Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara, who garnered 58 votes. She will now serve another term at the helm of the influential media body, with Francis Openda elected as her deputy.
The elections, originally scheduled for April 12, were postponed by a month due to lack of quorum.
Following the announcement of the results, Okwara accepted the outcome with grace and congratulated her opponent, along with other newly elected officials.
“To the incoming leadership: I extend my sincere congratulations. You have a big task ahead—to unite the Guild and restore trust in our shared institution. I wish you wisdom, clarity, and courage in this journey,” Okwara said in her concession message.

Other officials elected include Agnes Mwangangi (Radio Representative), Julius Bosire (Academia Representative), Mildred Awuor (Television Representative), Linda Bach (Print Representative), and Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online/Digital Representative).
Additionally, Ruth Nesoba, Martin Masai, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a were elected as trustees.
