President William Ruto’s legal team, led by Adrian Kamotho Njenga, has officially withdrawn from the impeachment case involving Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua currently before the High Court.
Before the three-judge bench, which includes Justices Eric Ogolla, Anthony Mrima, and Fridah Mugambi, Njenga explained that the decision was based on legal grounds.
He referenced a prior Supreme Court ruling, which established that the President cannot be involved in legal proceedings, including those initiated by Gachagua.
“I wish to inform the court that we will no longer be representing the sixth respondent in this matter. We have filed a notice to cease our representation due to the Supreme Court’s determination that the President cannot be subject to civil proceedings,” Njenga stated.

He further elaborated, “We cannot act in contradiction to an express court order, and our filing serves as adequate notice that the individual named as the sixth respondent is now unrepresented in these proceedings.”
Previously, Ruto had challenged the High Court’s jurisdiction over the impeachment case, arguing that it should be resolved by the Supreme Court instead.
Through his lawyer Njenga, Ruto claimed the court lacked the authority to hear the petition, labelling it an abuse of the court process.
