World Health Organization (WHO) officials are in Kisii to investigate the cause of a mysterious disease outbreak that has resulted in the hospitalization of over 200 people.
The WHO confirmed that their team is currently in South Mugirango, Kisii County, to assess local laboratory capabilities, support lab technicians in identifying the disease, and enhance coordination and response efforts as investigations continue.
“WHO is on the ground in South Mugirango, Kisii County, working to identify the cause of the unknown disease outbreak,” the organization stated.
“Our efforts include evaluating lab capacity, assisting lab officers with disease identification, and strengthening coordination and response efforts. Investigations are ongoing.”
Earlier, the Ministry of Health sent a team of experts to investigate the outbreak. Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni revealed that the disease has affected three villages in South Mugirango, with over 200 people impacted.
Muthoni explained that the investigative team is working alongside local health officials to analyze samples collected from the affected areas in order to determine the nature of the disease.
Patients admitted to hospitals have reported symptoms including severe diarrhea with bloody stools, fever, and intense headaches.
