Veteran journalist Pamella Sittoni has been appointed as the new Public Editor at Nation Media Group (NMG), marking a return to the media house where she previously held several senior editorial roles.
Sittoni succeeds Peter Mwaura, who retired in December 2024.
Sittoni brings with her a wealth of experience from a distinguished career spanning multiple leading media institutions.
Until June 30, 2023, she served as Group Managing Editor at NMG. She previously held the roles of Executive Editor in charge of partnerships and Managing Editor at both the Daily Nation and The EastAfrican.
Notably, Sittoni made history in January 2019 when she became the first woman to be appointed as Executive Editor and Managing Editor of the Daily Nation at NMG.
Her career also includes stints as Managing Editor at Standard Media Group (November 2003–July 2006) and as a Communications Specialist at UNICEF (July 2006–July 2012).
In a statement issued on Thursday, NMG said:
“The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Pamella Sittoni as the Public Editor of Nation Media Group PLC (NMG).”

As Public Editor, Sittoni will operate independently, representing NMG’s audiences across its print, digital, and broadcast platforms. Her core mandate will be to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to both NMG’s internal editorial standards and Kenya’s Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism.
Her responsibilities include addressing complaints related to accuracy, fairness, balance, and ethical issues in reporting.
She will also monitor compliance with editorial guidelines and policies in news gathering and presentation.
Beyond editorial oversight, Sittoni will also play a key role in media literacy and public education, helping audiences understand the values, practices, and responsibilities of journalism in a democratic society.
NMG emphasized that the independent nature of the Public Editor role—reporting directly to the Editorial Committee of the Board—underscores its commitment to self-regulation, ethical journalism, and openness to critique.

“This appointment reflects our enduring belief in media accountability as we strive to be the Media of Africa for Africa,” the company added.
Sittoni holds a Master’s degree in New Media, Democracy, and Governance from the University of Leicester. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Literature and a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi.
