Skyward Express has launched a new direct flight between Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
This follows the airline’s recent introduction of a similar route from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport.
The airline is strategically targeting the growing trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Kenya and Tanzania.
At the launch event held at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, Governor Abdulswammad Nassir, joined by Kenya Airports Authority Chairman Caleb Kositany, highlighted the importance of the new route in reducing both travel time and costs.
Previously, passengers were required to fly through Nairobi before continuing to Dar es Salaam, which added several hours to their journey.
“This direct flight will save passengers valuable time and reduce travel expenses, making the route more accessible to businesses, tourists, and local travelers,” said Governor Nassir.
He also discussed the broader potential of enhanced air connectivity, noting that an open skies policy could link Mombasa to over 300 cities globally, driving tourism and making a significant contribution to Kenya’s GDP by attracting more international travelers.
Nassir urged policymakers to consider offering tax incentives and other forms of support to local airlines, helping them compete effectively in the global aviation market.
Kositany commended Skyward Express for its role in bridging regional gaps, recognizing the airline’s efforts as a key component of Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals.
Captain Mohammed Abdi, Chairman of Skyward Express, reflected on the airline’s journey, recalling its first flight to Mombasa from Wilson Airport eight years ago.
“Our aim has always been to provide an exceptional travel experience, reducing flight times to Mombasa to under an hour, a benchmark that distinguishes us from other carriers,” he said.
