Siaya Skating Club in Kenya, founded three years ago, bagged the SportPesa Tujiamini Gold Award in Nyanza region, which comes with a Sh500,000 prize.
Dorcas Awuor founded the club in Bondo to demystify believe that skating is an exclusive, high-end sport.
“Skating is often perceived as a high-end sport, not usually found in the rural areas. I am glad our efforts are bearing fruit in building a sporting fun and competitive culture in children who would otherwise have had no chance or opportunity to enjoy the sport in this region”, said Awuor.
The club has over 85 children aged between three to fifteen years.
According to Awuor, the club has participated in both national and international events with the most recent being a national competition held in Nakuru this year finishing in the runners-up position.

“This Tujiamini award will enable us acquire necessary training and safety kits for the children. We foresee a life changing impact on the children by helping us participate in more competitions while reducing the strain on resources to help us meet our immediate needs.” She said.
SportPesa representative Deborah Maina, who presented the cheque said that the deserved the award owing to its commitment to uplifting talent and sporting competitiveness in children at a young age.
“Our objective is to encourage and reward such clubs not to give up but continue impacting lives positively through sports,” said Maina.
