The Social Health Authority (SHA) has revised its benefit package, significantly increasing coverage for key medical procedures, including open-heart surgery, which now stands at Ksh 952,000—up from the previous Ksh 450,000.
Other revised rates include dialysis, which has been adjusted from Ksh 9,500 to Ksh 10,650 per session, and PET/SPECT scans, which have increased from Ksh 50,000 to Ksh 53,500.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the changes during a visit to Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH), where he assessed progress in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as part of the government’s health transformation agenda.
Hosted by KUTRRH Board Chair Senator Kembi Gitura, the CS toured critical facilities including the 64-bed ICU, 21-bed Cath Lab, the Cancer Centre Annex featuring CyberKnife and LINAC technology, and the Transplant ICU. Discussions focused on the hospital’s milestones and the operational challenges it faces.
“The hospital management appealed for increased support to operationalize the new Cancer Centre, expand the budget to Ksh 250 million, procure additional LINAC machines, strengthen referral systems, and ensure timely SHA reimbursements to boost services under Taifa Care,” Duale said.
He also lauded the hospital’s recent achievement of performing its first two successful kidney transplants, urging accelerated implementation of UHC while emphasizing integrity, accountability, and compliance in all operations.
Duale was accompanied by Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Head of Nursing and Midwifery Services Dr. Judith Awinja, Acting KUTRRH CEO Dr. Zeinab Gura, and Deputy Director of Clinical Services Dr. Onyimbo Kerama, among other senior officials.
