Renowned family lawyer Judy Thongori, a trailblazer in family law and a respected legal figure, has passed away while receiving treatment in India.
The Senior Counsel who had recently fallen ill and was flown abroad for emergency care, succumbed to complications on Tuesday evening.
Dr. Fred Ojiambo, Chair of the Senior Counsel Bar (SCB), confirmed her death, describing her as a compassionate advocate and a dedicated mentor to younger legal professionals.
“Judy was the country’s foremost authority in family law, recognized for her contributions with a place on the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Roll of Honour,” Ojiambo said in a statement. “Her selflessness and willingness to serve the SCB and LSK as a mentor will be deeply missed.”
Thongori founded Judy Thongori & Company Advocates in 2003, a leading law firm specializing in family law, particularly in matrimonial disputes, children’s matters, and succession cases.
She also served as Deputy Director and Head of Litigation at the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA).

Her commitment to justice and mentorship within the legal community earned her widespread respect and admiration.
The SCB expressed its deepest condolences to Thongori’s husband, John, and their family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. We stand with them in this time of shock and grief,” said Ojiambo.
Thongori’s lasting contributions to Kenya’s legal profession and her unwavering dedication to justice have left an indelible mark. She will be remembered not only for her legal expertise but also for her compassionate service to the community.
