Senegal has appointed Pape Thiaw as the new head coach of its national football team, Lions of Teranga, with the aim of reclaiming the Africa Cup of Nations title and securing qualification for the upcoming World Cup.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed Thiaw’s appointment on Friday.
The 43-year-old had been serving as interim coach since October, following the dismissal of Aliou Cissé.
Cissé, who took over in 2015, led the team to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2022 and guided them to the last two World Cup tournaments.
Thiaw, a former Senegal forward, played for French clubs St Etienne, Strasbourg, and Metz, and was part of the team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup.
As a coach, he led the team to victory in the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament exclusively for local players.
