Castle Forest Lodge in Mt Kenya.

When she is not on political missions or her daily chores, former presidential running mate Martha Karua retreats to her quiet city home.

However, when she opts to take a break at her Kimunye village in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County the former minister and MP sometimes retreats to a magnificent castle at the foot of Mt Kenya.

Castle Forest Lodge is the place and according to Martha, the location is about three kilometres from her home.

When former European Union Ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue shared his experience at the castle, Martha revealed her good experience there.

“A chilly but enjoyable afternoon on the lower slopes of Mt Kenya at Castle Forest” Mordue tweeted.

Martha retweeted saying; “That is three kilometres from my home enjoy the great scenery”.

The castle off Kutus-Kianyaga road was built in 1910 with river stones and wood then in 2000 it was renovated and expanded to accommodate slightly over 30 guests.

It is Queen Elizabeth and founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta visited the castle albeit when they were young.

Visitors enjoy drink, charming little living room with a fireplace and during sunny days they wind up from leisure veranda surrounded by the mystic of the indigenous rain forest.

The scenic Castle overlooks Mt Kenya and from there, walking for 5 to 6 hours daily it takes climbers 5 to 7 days to scale to the Lenana peak of the mountain.

Nature walks, bird watching, trout fishing, horse riding and interacting with wildlife at a safe distance are some of amazing offers here.

The view of the forest and the mountain in the background is picturesque in addition to clean, cool streams and waterfalls.

Children between three and 12 years are charged half the amount when the share the rooms.
