President William Ruto has directed that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) be exempted from the ongoing budget cuts targeting various government agencies.
Ruto said the anti-graft body has been underfunded for a long time.
He also directed the National Treasury to consider increasing funds for the agency to operate efficiently.
In March EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak directed staff to adopt austerity measures to mitigate the budget challenges.
He said there was need to raise the budgetary allocation to the commission by Sh702,531,854 to enable it to discharge its mandate well.

According to Mbarak, EACC has an approved workforce of 1, 108 staff but in the last six years they have worked with half of this number.
“Very good staff leave the EACC because since 2004, salaries and Remuneration Commission has refused to review staff salaries claiming we are overpaid. This has a negative effect” Mbarak said.
