President William Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon as the next chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), pending parliamentary approval.
Alongside Ethekon, the President has nominated Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, Moses Mukhwana, Mary Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Aduol, and Fahima Abdallah to serve as IEBC commissioners.
If approved, Ethekon will succeed the late Wafula Chebukati, who passed away in February this year.
The nominations were formally announced in a press statement issued Thursday evening by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, just two days after President Ruto received the IEBC Selection Panel’s report.
“In accordance with our supreme law, the nominations have been transmitted to the National Assembly for consideration and approval in line with the IEBC Act and the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act,” Koskei said.
He further emphasized the importance of a fully constituted electoral body, stating: “In recognition of the indispensable role of the IEBC as a cornerstone of our democracy and the custodian of electoral management, His Excellency the President has urged the National Assembly to prioritize the consideration of these nominations.”
