Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has passed away at the age of 84.
Member of Parliament and fellow lawyer Otiende Amolo expressed his sorrow in a post on X, saying:
“I am deeply saddened to learn that my senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, has passed away! A quintessential advocate who delivered some of the finest court advocacy. Rest in power, Senior!”
Veteran lawyer and former MP Gitobu Imanyara also paid tribute, stating:
“I know you will all be as shocked as I am to learn that our friend, mentor, and great patriot, Pheroze Nowrojee, has passed away just a few hours ago. What a tremendous loss to the legal profession and to our country. As we mourn his death, let us also celebrate a life well lived.”
Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo eulogized him as a man of unmatched poise and honorable character, whose life was dedicated to service and justice.
He was widely admired for his steadfast defense of human rights, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, and mentored generations of lawyers throughout the country.
Pheroze Nowrojee was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1965 and became an advocate in Kenya in 1967.
He went on to enrol as an advocate in Tanzania in 1970 and in Zanzibar in 1989.
He attended Catholic Parochial Primary School in Nairobi before moving on to Billimorja High School in Panchgani, Maharashtra, India.
He later studied at Bombay University, Dar-es-Salaam, and eventually pursued his studies at Yale Law School in the United States.
