ODM leader Raila Odinga has come to the defense of Siaya Governor James Orengo following public criticism over a recent speech made during a burial in Siaya two weeks ago.
Speaking at the funeral of Raila’s long-time bodyguard George Oduor, Governor Orengo called on ODM supporters to stand firm and demand their rights, making his remarks in the presence of both Odinga and President William Ruto.
“I cannot be a praise-singer,” Orengo stated. “We fought for a democratic Constitution where people can speak freely. I urge Kenyans to tell their leaders the truth. If the current rhetoric continues, this country risks falling apart.”
He added, “Anything coming to Siaya is a right, not a favour. People must fight for their rights to build a better country.”
Addressing mourners on Friday in Kendu Bay, Raila dismissed claims of a rift, emphasizing that Orengo had done nothing wrong by voicing his views.
“James Orengo has not committed any crime. He is exercising his democratic right to speak. His remarks are grounded in the understanding we have with the government,” said Raila, referencing the working agreement between ODM and UDA.
Raila also backed Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, who recently criticised the national government for allegedly undermining devolution by holding onto powers meant for counties.
“When Prof. Nyong’o talks about devolution, he’s speaking the language of ODM,” Raila asserted.
