Professor Emeritus Ratemo Michieka, a distinguished scholar has been installed as the first Chancellor of Tharaka University.
The university achieved the full-fledged status in 2022.
Pro Michieka, an environmental scientist was also the founding Vice-Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology when it was awarded charter in December 19914.
He previously chaired the Inter University Council of East Africa, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, and Kenyatta University Council and others.
When late Mwai Kibaki came into power he appointed him the Director General of the National Environment Management Authority.
Scholars, government officials and political leaders graced his installation last week on Friday.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba, former Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob T. Kaimenyi, and Francis Muthaura, the former Head of Civil Service and who is now Chancellor Kenyatta University, were among the high-profile guests.
Leadership from other public universities, including the Vice Chancellor of Embu University Prof. Daniel Mugendi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Vice Chancellors Committee attended.
Representatives from more than ten public universities, including Karatina, Chuka University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Alupe University, Kaimosi University, Meru University, ICA University and Kisii University, joined in showing solidarity.

Also present were former VC Chuka University, Prof. Erastus Njoka, Njuri Ncheke, Tharaka MP George Murugara, Chuka-Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene and area Woman Rep Susan Ngugi.
