Newcastle United took a significant step toward the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, extending Alexander Isak’s remarkable goalscoring run.
Isak netted his 14th goal in 15 games, giving Newcastle the lead and setting them on course for a seventh consecutive win.
Anthony Gordon doubled the advantage in the 51st minute, scoring from the rebound after David Raya could only parry Isak’s shot.
Arsenal, second in the Premier League, now face a challenging task in the return leg at St James’ Park on February 5.
Despite early chances, including Gabriel Martinelli’s strike against the post, and close-range headers from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, the Gunners were unable to find the back of the net.
Newcastle, four-time English champions and six-time FA Cup winners, have not claimed a major trophy since their 1969 Fairs Cup triumph.
However, this victory has reignited their fans’ hopes that this could finally be the season they end their long wait for silverware.
With the second leg fast approaching, Newcastle supporters are already looking forward to an electric atmosphere at St James’ Park, where they hope to secure their place in the final and return to Wembley.
