Athletics Kenya (AK) Director of Development, Barnaba Korir, has confirmed that plans are underway to install a new running track at Nyayo National Stadium.
The project will be handled by Mondo, a renowned Spanish company specializing in synthetic track surfaces.
The last track upgrade at Nyayo took place in 2017, just ahead of the World Athletics Under-18 Championships, replacing the worn-out surface laid in 2010 for the African Athletics Championships.
During the 2017 youth championships, Nyayo served as a key training venue, while the main event was hosted at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani.
That same year, MISC also received a new Mondo track at an estimated cost of Sh360 million, replacing the original track used during the 1987 African Games.
Currently, both Nyayo Stadium and MISC are undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was rescheduled from February to August 2–28.
Korir noted that the new track at Nyayo is expected to be ready in time for the World Athletics Gold Tour Kip Keino Classic, set for May 31.
“We want to thank the government for fast-tracking the process—this is all for the benefit of our sports,” said Korir during a media briefing ahead of the national relay trials.
The 2025 World Athletics Relays Championships are scheduled to take place on May 10–11 at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou, China.
