The family of Joseph Ng’ang’a Muhia, a carpenter who vanished following a fire at the Modern Furniture Pacific workshop in Ruiru on December 18, 2024, has petitioned the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take another look at the case.
In response to what they describe as inaction by the Ruiru police, the family staged a protest outside the DCI headquarters today, voicing their frustration with the lack of progress in the investigation.
It is widely believed that Muhia perished in the fire, with rumours suggesting his body may have been concealed.
However, workshop owner Gibson Murage has firmly rejected these allegations, claiming that workers discovered the carcass of a dog, which he believes entered the building during the fire.

The DCI has assured the public that it will pursue the matter further.
Several workers and local residents who assisted in putting out the fire have reported finding a human body in the aftermath.
Murage, however, maintains that the dog’s carcass was collected by the DCI’s Forensics Department, which allegedly examined and disposed of it.
Despite these claims, Muhia’s family is unconvinced. They believe he was likely trapped in the blaze and died in the fire.

Meanwhile, influencers and businesspeople backing Murage are said to have harassed the grieving family and journalists investigating the incident.
Reports have also surfaced of individuals, claiming to be police officers, trailing those looking into the case.
When questioned about the investigation into the suspected death, Ruiru Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Jeremiah Dubai stated that they do not act based on rumours.
