The Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) of Kenya, founded by former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, has signaled a break from the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition, shifting its focus toward grassroots mobilization and party revitalization.
According to DEP Chairman Lenny Kivuti and party founder Kiraitu Murungi, the party has been consistently sidelined within the Kenya Kwanza alliance since its formation.
As a result, they now intend to strengthen the party’s internal structures and re-establish DEP as a formidable political force capable of negotiating on equal terms in any future coalitions.
The party has set its sights on the Mbeere North parliamentary seat, which is expected to fall vacant following the appointment of Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.
DEP has announced plans to field a candidate in the forthcoming by-election, once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officially declares the seat vacant.
Among those being considered for the DEP ticket is Muminji MCA and popular musician Newton Karish, who is reportedly the party’s top contender for the race.
