Peter Castro Oloo Aringo, a former minister during President Daniel arap Moi’s era and Member of Parliament for Alego Usonga, has died.

Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi confirmed that Aringo passed away at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi last evening.

A graduate of the University of Nairobi and Toronto University, Aringo entered politics in 1974.

During his first term, he championed significant legislation, including proposals for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a Parliamentary Service Commission, both of which faced initial hurdles but were revived in 2002.

Over 15 years, Aringo held multiple ministerial roles, including Information and Broadcasting, Environment, Labour, and Education during the KANU party era.

As Education Minister, he introduced the 8-4-4 education system, expanded the Kenya Science Teachers’ College, and established the Kenya Technical Trainers’ College (KTTC) to address the needs of the new technical education framework.

Aringo with then CS Eliud Owalo earlier this year.

He was instrumental in transforming Moi, Maseno, and Egerton universities into public institutions through legislation he sponsored in Parliament.

During his third term as MP for Alego Usonga, he was appointed Assistant Education Minister by President Moi and subsequently became a full Minister.
