Police in Kisii County have arrested four persons of interest and recovered a homemade firearm during a midnight operation at the Kisii bus park as security agencies intensify efforts to combat crime in the region.
The operation was conducted shortly after midnight on May 7, 2026, after officers from Kisii Central Police Station received information from members of the public about a suspicious gathering at the busy transport hub.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, officers moved swiftly to the scene and found the group gathered at the bus park. As police approached, the four individuals attempted to flee in different directions before they were cornered and arrested.
Firearm and crude weapons recovered
Police said a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of a homemade pistol loaded with a live 9mm round. Officers also recovered two knives, a hammer, and other crude weapons
The recovered homemade firearm has raised concern among investigators due to the increasing use of improvised weapons in robberies and other violent crimes in urban centres.
In a statement, the DCI commended members of the public for providing information that enabled the operation.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations commends members of the public for the timely information that aided the operation and once again reiterates its commitment to flushing out criminals and ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans,” theagency stated.
The four persons of interest are currently in custody undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
Security operations intensify in Kisii
The latest operation comes days after another security crackdown targeting mobile phone theft syndicates operating within Kisii Township.
In the earlier operation, detectives from Kisii Central Police Station working alongside officials from M-KOPA Kenya Limited raided St. Jude’s Building following the arrest of 44-year-old Harrison Ndirangu Mwirerie, a person of interest linked to handling stolen mobile phones.
During the raid, officers recovered 56 M-KOPA HMD and Nokia smartphones together with 233 assorted mobile phones believed to be under investigation for possible theft and illegal trade. Authorities said the devices were being held for forensic analysis as investigations continue.
Security agencies have recently intensified operations targeting criminal networks, illicit weapons, and organised theft syndicates in Kisii County following concerns over rising incidents of robbery and phone theft.
Residents have continued to call for increased police patrols in public areas including bus parks, markets, and urban centres, which authorities consider potential hotspots for criminal activity.
Community cooperation
Investigators have continued to emphasise the importance of community cooperation in crime prevention, noting that public intelligence has played a major role in recent arrests and recoveries.
Police said investigations into the recovered firearm and other items are ongoing, including efforts to establish whether the suspects may be linked to other criminal incidents within Kisii and neighbouring areas.
The DCI stated that security operations would continue as part of broader efforts to enhance public safety and disrupt criminal activities across the region.
Authorities have urged residents to continue sharing information with security agencies to support ongoing investigations and crime prevention efforts.
