Diana Chepkemoi, the World Under-20 3000m steeplechase bronze medalist, is setting her sights on breaking the women’s 3000m steeplechase world record this year.
The 17-year-old athlete is fully dedicated to her training as she works toward achieving this bold goal.
“I’m heading back to training to prepare for the upcoming track and field season. My goal is to break the world record for the women’s 3000m steeplechase this season,” Chepkemoi stated.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech currently holds the world record for the event, with a time of 8:44.32 set at the 2018 Monaco Diamond League.
Chepkemoi made a notable global debut last year, earning a bronze medal at the World Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, with a time of 9:29.84.
Chepkemoi also started 2025 on a strong note, finishing third in the Under-20 women’s 6km race at the final leg of the Athletics Kenya (AK) Cross Country Series at Cardinal Otunga High School in Kisii.
She clocked 20:07.7, trailing behind Joyline Chepkemoi, the winner (19:54.1), and second-place finisher Cynthia Chepkurui (19:54.2).
Looking back on her performance, Chepkemoi believes it provides the perfect foundation to build on for a successful season.
Her next target is the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour in Eldoret, where she is aiming for victory. The National Cross-Country Championships are set for February 8.
