Confederation of African Football (CAF) technical officials concluded their inspection tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the joint hosts for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), in Dar es Salaam on Friday.
The three countries have assured CAF that all preparations for the tournament, scheduled for August 2-30, will be completed on time.
After their visit to Nairobi last weekend, the CAF delegation held high-level consultative meetings in Kampala on February 26 with key stakeholders from the three nations to assess progress on the joint hosting preparations.
The discussions focused on finalizing the hosting agreement, securing government guarantees, structuring Local Organizing Committees (LOCs), and addressing governance issues among CAF, the host governments, LOCs, and national federations.
Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Sports, Peter Tum, remarked, “We are committed to delivering a well-organized tournament that meets international standards. This meeting was crucial in ensuring all stakeholders are aligned on key aspects, from infrastructure readiness to governance and operational planning.”
Tum also noted that several issues, including payment of hosting fees and stadium preparations, had been resolved.
Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, emphasized that with key commitments secured, the next phase will focus on refining the tournament’s operational details.
Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba John Aidan Mwaluko, confirmed that all outstanding logistical issues had been addressed.
Special documentation is being developed to allow fans from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to move freely across borders during the tournament.
CAF was represented by Samson Adamu, Director of Tournaments and Events, who reiterated CAF’s commitment to supporting the hosting process and ensuring the tournament meets its standards.
With all key agreements in place, focus now shifts to finalizing operational planning, enhancing infrastructure readiness, and strengthening regional coordination ahead of CHAN 2024 in August.
