Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has officially joined the legal fraternity following his admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
The legislator described the achievement as a pivotal moment in his personal and professional journey.
Reflecting on his upbringing in Nyalenda, Kisumu, Babu recalled the systemic injustices he witnessed during his formative years—experiences that he says fuelled his passion for legal advocacy and social justice.
“Growing up in the slums of Nyalenda, I saw, with deep concern, the constant harassment and humiliation of ordinary Kenyans at the hands of law enforcement—most of whom were unaware of their constitutional rights,” he said.
“My mother was arrested numerous times. Instead of being arraigned, she was beaten and coerced to pay bribes from her small-scale chang’aa sales. These injustices drove me to study and appreciate the law, and its role in protecting both procedural and substantive justice.”
Babu Owino emphasized that his legal credentials are not a personal accolade, but rather a means to deepen his commitment to public service.
“This achievement is not about personal grandiosity. It is about sharpening the tools of service,” he noted.
“The law is a new battlefield where I intend to fight even harder—for justice, equity, and the rights of the common mwananchi.”
The newly admitted advocate also issued a warning to government institutions, indicating that he would now extend his activism from the floor of Parliament to the courtroom.
“The Government should brace itself for more lethal arguments in defense of Kenyans—both in Parliament and in court,” Babu said.
“Expect legal action aimed at lowering the cost of living, creating employment, and ensuring institutional accountability.”
Babu holds a robust academic portfolio. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi (UoN), graduating with First Class Honors. He subsequently pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, graduating with Second Class Upper Division honors.
He further holds a Master’s degree in Architectural Science, a Master of Laws (LLM), and six professional diplomas across various fields.
Additionally, he has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in Political Leadership by Weldios University in the Benin Republic.
As he steps into the legal arena, Owino positions himself not just as a legislator, but as a defender of civil liberties and advocate for the socio-economically marginalized—a role he claims is both deeply personal and nationally urgent.
