The contest for the Thika Town Constituency parliamentary seat is rapidly evolving into a defining political moment, pitting established political figures against a new generation of leadership.

The entry of award-winning businessman and former Kenyatta University Students Governing Council Secretary General Ephraim Wainaina into the 2027 General Election has reshaped the contest’s tone and expectations.

With incumbent MP Alice Ng’ang’a having declared her intention to vie for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, the Thika Town parliamentary seat has officially fallen vacant ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The move has effectively ushered in an open succession contest, reigniting political activity across the constituency and attracting a crowded field of aspirants eager to position themselves early.

Wainaina, whose profile has been shaped largely outside elective politics, is pitching himself as a deliberate departure from career-driven leadership, arguing that Thika requires a representative grounded in practical solutions rather than political survival.

Speaking during an interview, Wainaina said the constituency’s economic potential remains largely untapped despite its strategic location and rich industrial heritage.

He noted that effective leadership must go beyond policy statements and instead focus on translating ideas into jobs, investment and sustainable opportunities for the youth.

“Leadership must be about solutions, not survival in politics. Thika has enormous economic potential, but it requires practical leadership to unlock it,” he said.

Political analysts say Wainaina’s entry has altered the tone of the race, introducing a more results-oriented narrative into the contest.

They note that the approach appears to resonate with young voters, small-scale traders and professionals who form a significant portion of the constituency’s electorate.

Several other aspirants are expected to battle for the seat as the race gathers momentum.

Among those positioning themselves ahead of the polls are East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Maina Karobia, Kamenu Ward MCA Peter Mburu, Andrew Muhia, businessman John Njue, and other local leaders.

However, observers note that Wainaina’s blend of private-sector experience, grassroots engagement and reformist messaging sets him apart in a field dominated by familiar political faces.
