Fred Kerley, a two-time Olympic 100m medallist, was arrested in Miami on Thursday following allegations that he assaulted his former girlfriend and fellow athlete, Alaysha Johnson.
According to an arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the 29-year-old sprinter is accused of punching Johnson in the face during an incident at a hotel in Dania Beach.
The arrest came just a day before Kerley was scheduled to compete in the second Grand Slam Track meet, which began Friday.
Kerley has been charged with one count of “battery – touch or strike.”
Grand Slam Track issued a brief statement confirming the arrest:
“Fred Kerley was arrested last night. The matter is under active investigation. Fred will not compete this weekend. We have no further comment at this time.”
Johnson, 28, an Olympic hurdler, was also slated to participate in the same event.
Kerley, a former world champion, earned bronze in the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics and silver in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
He had recently raced at the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica, and was scheduled to run the 100m and 200m events this weekend in Miami.
