Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is set to officially begin his political journey today, signaling a possible bid for the presidency in 2027.

This follows a series of high-level consultations with opposition leaders earlier this week, marking his first public appearance of the year.

According to the Team Matiang’i Secretariat, the former CS will kick off a tour of the Gusii region aimed at rallying grassroots support, particularly from his home community.

The tour will include meet-the-people engagements and courtesy visits to county leadership.

Dr. Matiang’i will be accompanied by a strong delegation of regional leaders, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Senators Richard Onyonka (Kisii) and Okong’o Mogeni (Nyamira), as well as several MPs and MCAs from the area.

Key stops on today’s itinerary include Chepilat, Keroka, Kijauri, Keumbu, Kisii town, Kemera, Kebirigo, Ekerenyo, and Nyamira. The tour will officially begin at 9:00 a.m. in Chepilat, located at the Nyamira-Bomet border.

Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama, a close ally of Matiang’i, confirmed that elected leaders from both within and outside the Gusii community will join him in a show of support for his presidential ambitions.

Meanwhile, veteran politician and former Cabinet minister Prof. Sam Ongeri has urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to back Matiang’i in his political quest.

The former CS’s behind-the-scenes meetings with opposition figures earlier this week are seen as part of broader coalition-building efforts ahead of the next general election.
