Chris Omollo was assaulted by police.

Daily Nation photojournalist Chris Omollo is recovering at Nairobi Hospital after suffering a head injury inflicted by a police officer during Sunday’s FKF Premier League match between Gor Mahia FC and Mara Sugar at Dandora Stadium, Nairobi.

Omollo was reportedly struck on the back of the head by an officer, causing him to lose consciousness. The incident occurred as he attempted to access the pitch through a designated media entrance, following instructions meant to ease congestion at the main gate.

According to the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), the attack was unprovoked. Omollo and fellow journalists had properly identified themselves and complied with all security protocols prior to the assault.

Eyewitnesses say the officer not only struck Omollo but also broke his spectacles in the process.

The photographer, who had previously undergone head surgery, required immediate medical attention and was rushed to hospital.

SJAK President James Waindi condemned the attack, saying, “This unprovoked assault on a journalist is unacceptable and completely contradicts the spirit of sport. Sports journalists are critical to the development of the industry, and their safety must be protected at all times.”

The incident has sparked outrage within media and sports circles, with calls for accountability and assurance of journalist safety at sporting events.
