Ambrose Rachier.

Long-serving Gor Mahia chairman, Ambrose Rachier, has secured another term at the helm of the club after being the only candidate cleared by the electoral board.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Gor Mahia Electoral Board, chaired by Githuu Wahome, it was confirmed that Rachier was the sole candidate cleared to run for the chairmanship, meaning he will have no competition in the upcoming club elections.

In addition to Rachier’s unopposed candidacy, the vice-chairperson position also saw only one candidate, Victor Omondi, who will similarly take the office unchallenged. The current Vice Chairperson, lawyer Francis Wasuna, did not submit an application for re-election.

The Secretary General position, however, has attracted a competitive race. Incumbent Sam Ocholla, a media mogul, is seeking a second and final term, but he will face stiff competition from Nicanor Arum and popular musician and radio personality Joseph Ogidi Oyoo, better known as Gidi Gidi from the Patanisho radio show.

Ocholla will rely on his experience and established networks as the incumbent, along with his financial backing, while Gidi Gidi aims to bring fresh, progressive ideas and is motivated by his lineage to Luo hero Gor Mahia, after whom the club is named.

The office of the Honorary Treasurer has attracted two candidates: Gerphas Okuku Ogolla, a current member of the Gor Mahia Executive Committee, and Phillip Nyakwana. Okuku will leverage his established networks to contest for the role.

Dolfina Odhiambo, the current Honorary Treasurer, had expressed interest in running for chairperson but did not apply. She also had an ongoing legal matter protesting the nomination fees set by the electoral board.

If Rachier assumes the chairmanship again, he will serve another four-year term, adding to the 17 years he has already spent leading the club.
