Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Rebecca Miano has come under fire after posting photos of herself wearing a Manchester United jersey.
Her choice has sparked a flurry of reactions from Kenyan internet users, many of whom are questioning why she supports an international football club instead of promoting local teams.
Critics argue that, as a public figure, Miano should focus on supporting Kenyan sports and clubs.
Many were surprised and disappointed, with some labeling her move as unpatriotic, given her role in advocating for Kenya’s culture and tourism.
While some Manchester United fans praised Miano for showing her support for the club, a large number of Kenyan netizens expressed disapproval, feeling that government officials should use their platforms to champion local sports.
They specifically mentioned Kenyan football clubs like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, and the Kenyan rugby team Shujaa, who recently delivered an outstanding performance.
Several comments on social media voiced concerns that her actions send a negative message to the youth.
“Never seen you support local clubs. I wonder if you promote tourism for Old Trafford or Kenya,” remarked Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.
“Imagine the CS for Tourism hyping a foreign league while local attractions and sports struggle for visibility.
What a spectacular misread of the job description,” said advocate Willis Evans Otieno.
However, some netizens came to Miano’s defense, arguing that wearing a Manchester United jersey doesn’t diminish her patriotism or her commitment to promoting Kenya’s tourism.
They pointed out that personal preferences, such as supporting a foreign football team, shouldn’t be seen as a reflection of one’s dedication to the country.
