Outgoing Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen officially handed over the sports docket to Salim Mvurya today at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi.
This transition comes as Kenya faces a pressing deadline to prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next month.
Mvurya, the third Sports CS in less than two years, now shoulders the responsibility of ensuring that Kenya meets the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) January 15 deadline to co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania.
“I have officially taken over, and the work begins now. It is an honour to serve the people of Kenya. My focus will be on completing ongoing infrastructure projects and creating facilities that nurture talent across the country,” Mvurya said.
The new CS had a virtual meeting with his counterparts from Uganda and Tanzania yesterday, where they assessed the preparations for the tournament.
“We discussed our progress and are all committed to ensuring the tournament’s success. I’m confident that we will host a successful CHAN next month,” Mvurya stated.
Mvurya underscored the importance of investing in infrastructure to ensure that Kenya meets international standards.

“My goal is to deliver facilities that will not only host CHAN but also help cultivate the immense talent within our country,” he added.
With urgent infrastructure needs, systemic challenges, and a major international tournament approaching, Mvurya’s leadership will play a key role in shaping the future of Kenyan sports.
Murkomen, during the handover, emphasized the need for urgent reforms within sports federations.
“There are federations that operate like one-man shows, with no legitimacy. They exist to enrich themselves while denying opportunities to the youth,” Murkomen remarked.
He also called for a review of the Sports Act of 2013 and announced the formation of a task force aimed at addressing corruption, favouritism, and mismanagement in sports federations.

“Through extensive consultations, the task force will identify priorities and propose reforms to improve transparency and inclusivity,” Murkomen added.
Earlier, the two CSs conducted an inspection tour at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums as Kenya races against time to ensure both venues are ready for the February 1-28 event.
