Ochieng Rapuro has resigned from his position as Editor-in-Chief of Standard Media Group after a distinguished five-and-a-half-year tenure at the Mombasa Road-based company.
His resignation was officially confirmed on January 3, taking the media industry by surprise.
A seasoned journalist with decades of experience, Rapuro earned praise for his compelling storytelling and exceptional leadership within the newsroom.
His departure adds to a growing list of high-profile resignations at the company, which is currently grappling with financial challenges and undergoing restructuring efforts aimed at reversing declining revenues.
As one of Kenya’s oldest and most influential media houses, Standard Group has been facing significant turmoil, with layoffs and cost-cutting measures dominating recent news.

Rapuro’s impressive journalism career spans several leadership roles. Prior to joining Standard Group in 2019, he served as Managing Editor at Nation Media Group for 13 years, overseeing key publications such as The East African and Business Daily. He succeeded Joseph Odindo as Editor-in-Chief at The Standard.
A respected academic, Rapuro holds a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with distinction in 1997.
He also earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Potsdam in Germany in 2003.

He is set to be replaced by veteran journalist Chacha Mwita who in July last year resigned from the Standard group board where he was a Non-Executive Director.
Mwita had earlier worked as SG Editorial Director but was sacked in 2014 over a story that enraged then President Uhuru Kenyatta.
