Victor Wanyama at CF Montreal.

Victor Wanyama, the former captain of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, will be leaving CF Montreal after a four-year stint with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

The club confirmed in a statement that Wanyama’s departure comes as his contract concludes at the end of this year.

During his time at Montreal, Wanyama made 117 appearances and scored five goals after joining from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on March 30, 2020.

His debut came in a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match against Honduran side C.D. Olimpia, where Montreal suffered a 2-1 defeat, with Wanyama assisting Saphir Taider’s goal.

The former AFC Leopards midfielder also captained Montreal to the 2021 Canadian Championship, leading them to a 1-0 win over Toronto FC in the final.

Although Wanyama initially decided not to renew his contract in October 2022, he reversed his decision and signed a two-year extension in January 2023.

He retired from international football in 2022 after 14 years with the Harambee Stars, including nine years as captain.

In addition to Wanyama, goalkeeper Logan Ketterer, whose contract also expires, and Uruguayan defender Joaquin Sosa, who has been on loan, will be leaving CF Montreal.
