President William Ruto has announced that the nearly finished Northern Collector Tunnel in Murang’a will greatly enhance Nairobi’s water supply, adding an extra 140 million litres per day to the water-scarce city.

Speaking at the African Divine Church at Nairobi Primary School, Ruto emphasized the disparity between Nairobi’s status as the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme and the poor living conditions many residents endure.

“We cannot continue to live in a dirty city when it is a global hub for environmental matters,” he remarked.

Currently, Nairobi’s water demand stands at around 810 million litres per day, while the supply is only about 550 million litres, creating a shortfall of 260 million litres.

The new tunnel is expected to help address this deficit not only in Nairobi but also in surrounding counties like Murang’a, Machakos, Kajiado, and Kiambu.

Ruto reassured residents in areas such as Kibra and Lang’ata that his administration is working closely with the Nairobi County Government to tackle water issues.

He reaffirmed his commitment to improving Nairobi’s liveability through various initiatives, including the ongoing efforts to clean up the Nairobi River.
