Githurai residents risking lives on dreaded railwayline bridge

After floods washed away a bridge which was a lifeline for Githurai 44 and Kahawa West residents in Nairobi County, residents have resorted to crossing the river using a risky, dreaded railway line bridge.

The bridge several metres above the river has claimed lives in the past. This prompted the construction of a bridge nearby for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, but that was wrecked by heavy downpour in April.

Pedestrians, especially children, the old, women and drunkards from nearby Soweto slums are at big risk of tumbling down as wooden sleepers on the bridge have decayed and some have started collapsing.

Motorcyclists are forced to push the bikes on thin rails with precision of a surgeon, lest they lose their machines as has happened in the past.

The other two alternative routes cost them from Sh70 to Sh100.
